Ride-hailing giant Uber has officially pulled out of Nigeria, bringing an end to 12 years of operations in the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the company confirmed that it has “wound down” all operations in Nigeria effective September 2, 2026.
“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” Uber said.
The US-based firm entered the Nigerian market in 2014, launching first in Lagos before expanding to other cities. It became one of the most recognised ride-hailing platforms in the country.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” the company stated.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely.”
Uber acknowledged the impact of the exit, adding: “We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.”
The company said it will “support drivers, riders and local team members through the transition” in the coming weeks. No specific reason was given for the shutdown in the statement.
The exit leaves a major gap in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, which is currently dominated by Uber, Bolt, and local players.
