United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, USAID Mission Director, Anne Patterson, and U.S. Mission staff members participated in several high-level engagements with key stakeholders in Adamawa State.
The trip included a courtesy visit to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, which underscored the extensive multi-sector U.S. government partnership with Adamawa State; a meeting with the Lamido of Adamawa Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, to encourage him to leverage his networks to advance shared humanitarian and development objectives; and a visit to the Malkohi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp, where the international organisation for Migration is helping IDPs regain access to land after years of displacement.
The Mission delegation met with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral officer, Kassim Gaidam, to discuss preparations for the 2023 general elections, including the ongoing voter registration process and the inclusion of IDPs.
They also attended a photo gallery and reception with state government officials that highlighted the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief investments.
On May 19, Ambassador Leonard delivered a keynote address to officially launch the USAID/Nigeria Accelerating Control of the HIV Epidemic Activity in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
On May 21, the Ambassador was awarded an honorary doctorate and delivered the American University of Nigeria’s (AUN) 13th Commencement Speech: “Want to help Nigeria and the World? Find a Way to Serve!”
