Military hails “major breakthrough” as pressure mounts on insurgents in North East

The noose is tightening.

The Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, has announced the surrender of two senior terrorist commanders to troops in Geidam — what the military described as another “major breakthrough” in the war against insurgency.

According to the Acting Media Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the commanders laid down their arms before troops of Sector 2 in Geidam on July 4, 2026.

They arrived in Maiduguri about 7:30 p.m. on July 5, where they are in military custody for profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.

*—“They Held Key Positions”—

Captain Goni said preliminary findings showed the men occupied influential positions within the terrorist leadership hierarchy and had deep knowledge of the group’s operations, command structure, and logistics network.

The intelligence already obtained, he added, had provided critical insights into the group’s operational methods, sustainment mechanisms, and support systems.

“The initial intelligence gathered from the surrendered commanders is expected to significantly enhance ongoing operations aimed at locating, disrupting and dismantling the remaining terrorist hideouts in the theatre,” he said.

The military spokesperson said the surrender was proof that sustained offensives were working.

He attributed the development to relentless land and air operations*, backed by enhanced intelligence gathering, which have continued to restrict terrorist movement, degrade their fighting capacity, and break their command structures.

“These sustained military pressures have made it increasingly difficult for many terrorist leaders and fighters to continue the insurgency, forcing them to surrender,” Goni stated.

He added that the latest development reflects the growing disintegration of the terrorist group and the cumulative impact of operations across the North East.

Reaffirming the military’s resolve, Captain Goni said Operation HADIN KAI remained committed to sustaining the momentum until all terrorist elements were either neutralised or compelled to surrender.
