Two bodyguards of former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua died in a road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State on Monday, December 29, 2025.

A report said the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) Joshua was travelling with collided with a parked truck on the ever-busy highway.

“Those (two deceased) that passed on in the accident were his bodyguard,” the report said.

Confirming the incident via a statement, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Joshua sustained minor injuries, adding that the 36-year-old boxer had been taken to hospital.

Babaseyi added that an investigation into the accident had commenced.

The police spokesperson stated: “The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated. He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and receiving medical attention.

“Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene. The deceased have been conveyed to Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.

“The Ogun State Police Command extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the public that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has commenced.”

Joshua, who is the son of British-Nigerian parents, attended a boarding school in Ikenne, 53 miles from where the crash happened, before returning to the United Kingdom at the age of 12.

The accident occurred just over a week after Joshua knocked out American social media star Jake Paul in the sixth round of a bout in Miami, United States.

Joshua, who returned to the ring after a 15-month layoff, is expected to fight long-time rival Tyson Fury in 2026.
