The Zonal Secretary and Acting Chairman of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr.George Turnah has praised National Chairman Amb. Umar Damagum’s decision to recognize Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, calling it a move that will unify and strengthen the party.

In a live televised interview on Thursday with a Nigerian media outlet, Turnah likened Damagum’s decision to a pilot safely landing a troubled flight.

He dismissed opposition from some party leaders, asserting that Anyanwu’s role, upheld by the Supreme Court, is secure, and he has been effectively carrying out his duties as the party’s scribe since the ruling.

Turnah acknowledged past concerns about the PDP’s stability but expressed optimism about its future, emphasizing that a robust opposition like the PDP is vital for Nigeria’s democracy.

He highlighted the party’s enduring popularity among Nigerians and its readiness to reclaim its position as a leading political force.

Clarifying the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) role, Turnah stated that only the National Convention, with INEC’s involvement, can challenge Anyanwu’s position under the party’s constitution. “Senator Anyanwu has been fulfilling his responsibilities as National Secretary since the Supreme Court’s verdict,” he said.

Addressing rumors of his suspension by the Bayelsa State Chapter, Turnah denied any valid suspension, noting that the Zonal Executive Committee overturned the State Working Committee’s action.

He affirmed that, following the South-South Zonal Executive Convention in Calabar, he, Dan Orbih, and others remain the legitimate zonal executives. Turnah also confirmed his role as acting State Chairman, appointed by the Zonal Executive Committee, until substantive state executives are elected in Bayelsa.
