The President Donald Trump administration is set to introduce a limited-edition United States passport bearing the president’s image.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the special passport will be issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

The initiative represents a rare move in democratic nations, where it is highly unusual for the image of a sitting leader to appear in official travel documents.

According to the US State Department, the commemorative passport design features a portrait of Trump superimposed over the historic July 4, 1776, document.

The department, traditionally seen as nonpartisan, shared a preview of the design on its official social media platforms.

Trump would become the first sitting US president to be depicted in American passports, underscoring his administration’s broader efforts to leave a distinct imprint on federal institutions.

Another department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP the Trump-themed passports would only be available at in-person appointments in Washington “for as long as there is availability.”

The official added that passports would come at no additional cost.

It was not immediately clear if passport applicants could refuse the Trump picture, although the majority of Americans seeking passports do so through local post offices, which would not provide the special edition.
