The Trump administration on Monday unveiled a sweeping plan to cripple Iran’s economy, threatening secondary sanctions against any country, company or individual that continues to do business with the Islamic Republic.

Unveiling what he called “Operation Economic Outcast” at the Treasury Department, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington was launching “an economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe.”

—“The Clock Just Started Ticking”—

Bessent said President Donald Trump is personally calling world leaders with “specific requests to cease their interactions” with Tehran.

Instead of immediate blanket sanctions, the U.S. will first send timelines to individual countries to “shut down activities we have identified.”

“Any entity that facilitates money laundering on behalf of Iran will be removed from the U.S. dollar system,” Bessent warned. “The clock just started ticking.”

The administration branded the initiative Iran’s “Economic D-Day.”

—China In The Crosshairs?—

The announcement immediately raised questions about China, Iran’s largest trading partner and buyer of its oil.

Washington and Beijing are currently in a fragile trade truce after a bruising tariff war last year. Trump and President Xi Jinping held a high-profile summit in Beijing in May, and Xi is due in Washington in late September.

Bessent made clear no country would be spared.
“We want to make clear here today that no one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions,” he said.

“If they facilitate transactions and are part of the ecosystem that turns Iranian oil into money, into repression, they will be targeted,” he added, when asked specifically about Chinese banks.

—Widening The Net—

According to Bessent, the U.S. will target enablers who:
1.Buy or transport Iranian oil
2.Facilitate financial transactions
3.Accept Iranian flights
4.Allow seaborne transfers

The sanctions scope is also being expanded to cover Iran’s digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping sectors.

The objective, Bessent said, is “to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.”

—War Stalls, Sanctions Ramp Up—

The economic offensive comes as the U.S. military campaign against Iran approaches the six-month mark with no clear victory.

A weak ceasefire reached in June collapsed before its 60-day deadline. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of leverage for Tehran, with oil traffic still far below pre-war levels. U.S. officials have also reported fewer strikes in recent weeks amid speculation that weapons stockpiles are running low.

With diplomatic and military options stalled, the White House appears to be pivoting fully to economic pressure as its primary tool against Tehran.

It remains unclear which countries will receive the first “timelines” to cut ties with Iran, or how Beijing, New Delhi and other major buyers will respond.
