Police detain woman, warn against spreading unverified claims as OAU hospital awaits autopsy

ILE-IFE, OSUN — A Sunday afternoon that began like any other in Odi-Olokun ended in tragedy, scandal, and superstition after a popular local Vigilance group member collapsed and died minutes after a sexual encounter, leaving his lover in police custody and an entire community whispering about “thunderbolt.”

The man, identified as Sunday but widely known as “Apetu”, was rushed out of a room on Ooni Ilare Street around 2:30pm on Sunday gasping for air, screaming, and in visible distress.

In a video that has since gone viral, Apetu was seen pleading with the woman: “Give me urine… give me urine.” Minutes later, he was gone.

The woman was immediately taken into custody by operatives of the Moore Police Division in Ile-Ife.

A situation report credited to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, described Apetu as “showing signs of severe physical distress” immediately after the encounter.

His body has been deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, pending an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.

But on the streets of Ile-Ife, medical facts have taken a backseat to folklore.

Residents are claiming Apetu fell victim to what Yoruba tradition calls “aran” — thunderbolt — a supposed spiritual affliction believed to transfer harm through sexual contact.

Under the belief, a person “struck” by thunderbolt can pass the fatal effect to a sexual partner.

Police sources, however, said there is no scientific or medical confirmation linking the death to the claim.

A senior officer of the Osun State Police Command who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “We are aware of the videos and the stories circulating online. We urge members of the public to desist from spreading unverified information. Let the doctors and the law do their work.”

The death has sent shockwaves through Odi-Olokun, where Apetu was known as a active member of the local vigilante group.

Neighbors described him as strong and healthy. That he could collapse so suddenly has fueled both fear and speculation.

As of press time, the identity of the detained woman has not been released by police. Authorities say she is assisting with investigations.

The Police Command has appealed to residents to *remain calm* and allow medical experts to establish what killed Apetu before conclusions are drawn.

“Until the autopsy is out, everything else is speculation,” the officer added.

The incident is the latest to highlight the tension between traditional beliefs and modern medicine in parts of Osun, where stories of “aran” still carry weight in everyday conversation.
