President Bola Tinubu has administered the oath of office to Ayo Omidiran as the new Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), along with 37 commissioners representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Ayo Omidiran, a 59-year-old politician and sports administrator from Osun State, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2019.
She is also the founder of Omidiran Babes Football Club and has held various positions in sports administration, including roles in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and FIFA.
The Federal Character Commission is mandated to ensure equitable distribution of public posts and socio-economic infrastructure among Nigeria’s federating units
It is also to prosecute cases where the federal character principle is violated.
In addition, the FCC is mandated to create and implement guidelines for government agencies and employers to adhere to the federal character principle

As the new Chairman of the FCC, Ayo Omidiran’s task is to ensure that the commission effectively promotes fairness and equity in the distribution of public offices and opportunities across the country.
With her experience in legislative and sports administration, she is well-equipped to tackle the challenges of promoting Nigeria’s federal character principle.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by notable government officials, including the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake.
