President Bola Tinubu has stated that there is no plan by his administration to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Addressing a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, Tinubu emphasised his commitment to strengthening democracy.
“I have no plans to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. I have never altered the registration of any political party in INEC. I will be the last person to advocate such a thing,” Tinubu declared.
He expressed his willingness to welcome individuals who wish to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tinubu announced the conferment of honorary awards on notable figures, including the late Kudirat Abiola, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Gen. Shehu Yar’Adua, and Ken Saro-Wiwa.
“As we mark this Democracy Day, we honour the memories of those who fought for our democracy and those who have contributed to its growth,” he said.
The President highlighted the progress made in Nigeria’s democratic journey, including the easing of inflation, stabilization of the naira exchange rate, and increased revenue.
He also emphasized his administration’s commitment to achieving food sovereignty through agricultural reforms and providing opportunities for young people through skill acquisition and job creation.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen praised Tinubu’s leadership and economic reforms.
Akpabio described the National Assembly as a bastion of democracy and reaffirmed its willingness to partner with the executive to address Nigeria’s complex issues.
“Under Tinubu, we have seen reforms from removal of subsidy, unification of exchange rate to tax reforms,” Akpabio noted.
