President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

This includes the removal of Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, recently appointed Vice-Chancellor, and Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the Registrar.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information Strategy Bayo Onanuga.

The council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, faced allegations of appointing an unqualified Vice-Chancellor through a flawed process, prompting federal intervention.

Other council members dismissed include Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.

The Federal Government acted after the university’s Senate accused the council of disregarding governance laws, further escalating tensions in the 33-year-old institution.

In a related move, President Tinubu removed Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

Salami was accused of unlawfully suspending the Vice-Chancellor and defying directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse his decision.

His conduct allegedly included abusive and threatening behaviour toward ministry officials.

The federal government emphasized the critical role of university councils in ensuring adherence to established laws and maintaining operational stability.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving education standards and warned against governance practices that disrupt academic institutions.
