President Bola Tinubu has officially directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York as he would not be going for cogent reasons.

According to a statement signed by the president’s special adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, this decision follows Tinubu’s recent return from trips to China and the United Kingdom.

The president opted to remain in Nigeria to address pressing domestic issues, including the aftermath of the recent flooding in Borno and some states.

The general debate, under the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” will run from September 24 to 28, 2024.
