The Federal Government has approved seven new zonal offices for the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, as part of efforts to tighten transparency and accountability in public spending.
BPP Director-General Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun announced the expansion Sunday at a World Bank-supported SPESSE Implementation Mission meeting in Abuja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave the approval to deepen BPP’s oversight nationwide.

1. Sustainable Procurement cadre: FG is creating “Sustainable Procurement” as a specialised recruitment area. Graduates training at six Centres of Excellence – ABU Zaria, FUTO, ATBU Bauchi, University of Lagos, Joseph Tarka University Makurdi, and University of Benin – will feed directly into public sector procurement roles.
2. Legal & strategic updates: BPP is working with stakeholders to develop a National Procurement Strategic Framework and amend the Public Procurement Act, 2007.
3. Professionalisation drive: Over 2,075 procurement officers have been verified, with 816 certification results already received under the Nigeria Public Procurement Certification Programme, NPPCP.

World Bank representative Mr. Ishtiak Siddique praised BPP’s progress on certification and capacity building.
Verification exercises begin July 2026.
Priority areas for collaboration: standard tender documents, procurement sustainability retreats, e-procurement rollout, and MSME training.
Siddique called electronic procurement “the next major milestone” for a more transparent system.

BPP is also advancing the National Procurement Officers Management System, NAPOMS, and strengthening ties with the Office of the SGF, Head of Civil Service, and Federal Civil Service Commission.
The reforms align Nigeria’s procurement system with global best practices, according to BPP.
