“This is not my victory — It’s yours”: New NMA president Omoti vows to restore pride in Nigerian doctors

Prof. Afekhide Ernest Omoti didn’t take the stage to celebrate. He took it to charge.

Moments after emerging as President of the Nigerian Medical Association for 2026–2028, Omoti told a packed hall of doctors that his win “belongs to every doctor across Nigeria” who still believes in a stronger, united profession.

“Today, I stand before you deeply humbled… and fully aware of the weight of the mandate you have entrusted to me,” he said. “This moment is not about celebration alone — it is a call to responsibility.”

Omoti saluted Nigerian doctors serving “from the busiest tertiary hospitals to the most remote primary care centers,” calling them “the true heroes of this story.”

“Your sacrifices, your sleepless nights, your dedication in the face of uncertainty — these are the pillars upon which this victory stands,” he said.

He extended an olive branch to fellow contestants: “This was a contest of ideas, not a division of purpose. There is no ‘us’ or ‘them’ — there is only one NMA, one voice, one mission.”

Omoti laid out a five-point vision:
1. Welfare and dignity of every Nigerian doctor
2. Strategic engagement with government and stakeholders
3. Professional unity across all cadres and regions
4. Capacity development and global competitiveness
5. Restoring pride in the profession

“We will speak with courage. We will act with integrity. We will lead with purpose,” he vowed.

To Nigeria’s restless young medics, many eyeing the exit door, Omoti was direct: “I see you, I hear you, and I stand with you. Your struggles will not be ignored. Together, we will build pathways that allow you not only to dream, but to thrive here at home.”

He asked past leaders for wisdom, promising to strengthen their legacy. And to doctors abroad: “This administration belongs to you. Your voice will be heard. Your contributions will be valued.”

Omoti closed by framing his tenure as more than a term in office.

“Let history remember this moment — not just as a victory, but as the beginning of a transformation. A transformation fueled by unity. Driven by purpose. Sustained by courage.”

“Together, we will rise above our challenges. Together, we will redefine our future. Together, we will build an NMA that commands respect, inspires confidence, and delivers results.”
