On Wednesday morning, the world woke up to the devastating news that music legend, thespian and journalist, Onyeka Onwenu had passed away. The elegant stallion, as she was famously known in the entertainment circle reportedly slumped after a private performance in Lagos on Tuesday night.

She was said to be promptly rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, aged 72. Folks say she was apparently healthy and literally full of life before the unfortunate incident. She obviously bowed out of earth stage like a legend, doing what she loves most, which is putting smiles on people’s faces through music and entertainment.

The news sent currents of grief around the globe as fans and well wishers have praised her contributions to music, entertainment and politics in Nigeria. Tributes and encomiums have pouring in from all corners and accross all divides. Onyeka Onwenu was a standout musician, thespian, broadcaster, politician and a social crusader. She was vocal, assertive, passionate and brilliant.

Her sons, Tijani and Abraham Ogunlende have expressed their gratitude to everyone who have come through for the family at these critical times. The children, on behalf of the entire family, through a press statement also praised God for the life of their late mother as they celebrate her positive impact in the society.

“We are overwhelmed with your well wishes, love and tributes, through various media and we are grateful to you, and thank you on behalf of her. We also recognize that it is the joy and memories that she gave to Nigerians that has afforded us such an immense outpouring of love. We are very aware of her diverse and multitalented nature. An icon, a musical legend, a movie star, a journalist, a humanitarian and a politician, The Elegant Stallion. She was a world-class performer who serenaded and blessed multiple generations with the beauty of her voice and songs of unity and love.”

“We are honored and deeply touched by all your kind words, condolences, and gestures of support from Nigerians of all ages and from around the world. Your expressions of love and your admiration for her now extends to us and it has brought much comfort and solace. We also recognize that this love and comfort afforded to us is because of you, and the love you have for her and you have our deepest gratitude. The impact of her life and legacy will always be felt, may we continue to draw inspiration from her lifelong advocacy of peace, unity, and One Love as we Celebrate her”, the statement read in part.

Other family sources also confided in our newsmen that the funeral plans and activities will be made public in due time.
