The remains of Nkechi Nweje, a veteran Nollywood actress, have been buried in Anambra State amid tears.
The 60-years -old was buried at her hometown of Onitsha, Anambra State, after a night of tribute was hosted in her honour.
Videos that emerged online showed moments from the funeral ceremony in Onitsha as friends and family members could not hold back tears as they bid farewell to the late thespian.
Dignitaries who witnessed the event included a former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Among actors seen at the event were Ngozi Ezeonu, Ebele Okaro, Stanley Ontop and Chief Imo
Nkechi Nweje died on March 21 following complications from abdominal surgery she underwent in November 2024.
Initially believed to be recovering, her condition relapsed in the days leading to her death.
Born on June 5, 1964, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nweje was renowned for her compelling portrayals of maternal figures in films such as Royal War, Festival of Sorrow and Coming Back from Congo.
She began her acting career alongside Kenneth Okonkwo in the film “The Biggest Boy in Town.”
Okonkwo remembered her as a loving, decent, and hardworking individual whose passion for acting was unparalleled.
Nkechi Nweje is survived by her husband, Azubuike Nweje, a director with the Anambra State Ministry of Health and their six children.
