Four siblings were injured on Wednesday morning when a tear gas canister exploded at Bakin Kwata in the Sharada area of Kano metropolis.

The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement, saying it occurred at about 7:50 a.m. and produced heavy smoke, choking irritation, and a burning sensation.

The Bomb Disposal Unit quickly cordoned off the area and launched a post-blast investigation.

Seventeen-year-old Khadeeja Rabiu sustained serious injuries to her right hand and other parts of her body, while her siblings—Fatima, 15; Alamin, 11; and Suleiman, 3—suffered minor bruises.

All four were rushed to Murtala Muhammed Hospital for treatment.

Police investigators recovered the handle, safety lock pin, and rotating guard of the canister at the scene, with a strong peppery odour still noticeable.

According to the findings, the device had been scavenged from a nearby refuse dump and brought home by one of the children, where it later exploded in Khadeeja’s hand.

Authorities said the dump site was subsequently screened for other hazardous items, while residents were sensitised on the dangers of collecting unknown objects from refuse heaps.

The investigation was concluded peacefully at about 12:15 p.m.
