The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that Coach Augustine Eguavoen will take charge of the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, following the collapse of a deal with German Coach Bruno Labbadia due to stringent German tax regulations.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau revealed that negotiations with Labbadia fell through after the coach insisted that the NFF cover the tax liabilities on his salary, which could range from 32% to 40%.
“We cannot shoulder the responsibility of paying an additional tax on top of the agreed monthly wage,” Gusau explained.
The NFF and Labbadia had initially reached an agreement in principle, but the tax implications were not discussed until later, leading to the deal’s collapse.
Eguavoen, the NFF’s Technical Director, will now lead the Super Eagles for the qualifiers against Benin Republic in Uyo on September 7th and Rwanda in Kigali on September 10th.
This will mark Eguavoen’s fourth stint as head coach of the team, having previously managed the squad in 2005-2007, 2010, and 2022.
