A petrol-laden tanker exploded in Agbor community of Delta State on Sunday, leaving in its trail death of four persons and destruction of property, including buildings housing offices of some banks.

Some persons reportedly sustained injuries from the ensuing fire.

The incident occurred on the old Lagos-Asaba Road, beside First Bank and Access Bank, after the tanker, which was reportedly carrying petrol, lost control.

The explosion also caused significant damage to structures in the area, including First and Access banks.

Residents, caught in the devastating inferno, were seen scrambling for safety in viral videos, as the tanker and nearby structures were consumed by the flames.

Reacting to the incident, Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed deep sorrow, saying four persons were killed while three others sustained injuries.

The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the incident as horrifying and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families.

“This tragic incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read.
