Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Tuesday night [December 23, 2025] secured sweet victory over hard-fighting Taifa Stars of Tanzania in their opening Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morris.
The Eagles took control of the game from the outset of the game.
They broke the deadlock in the 36th minute after defender Semi Ajayi headed Alex Iwobi’s cross pass the Taifa Stars’ goal tender to hit the back of the net.
But shortly after the resumption of play in the second half, M. Mombwa scored for Tanzania to draw level with Nigeria.

The Nigerian defence was completely outrun due to defensive tardiness. The ball was put beyond the reach of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
But the parity did not last, as Iwobi found Ademola Lookman two minutes later, with the 2024 African Footballer of the Year unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box that sailed into the net.
