The Progressive Students Movement (PSM) has urged Nigerians to support the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) rather than attack its personnel.
The PSM President, Mr Bestman Okereafor, in a statement on Thursday in Enugu, praised the gallant efforts of NDLEA officers under Chairman Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retired).
Okereafor applauded Marwa’s visionary leadership anchored on innovation, dedication, resilience and steadfastness in combating drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
.
“The leadership of PSM-Nigeria joins the world, especially Nigeria, in marking the 2025 United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
“To commemorate the day, we call on Nigerians to support the NDLEA instead of attacking its personnel,” Okereafor said.
He stressed the need for sustained sensitisation and public awareness to curb the menace of drug abuse in society.
Okereafor urged parents, students, youths and the general public to say no to drug abuse and trafficking.
He noted that drug abuse causes nausea, abdominal pain, appetite loss, and weight reduction, among other harmful effects.
“Drug use increases pressure on the liver, posing risks of severe liver damage or total liver failure,” he said.
Other effects, he added, include seizures, strokes, mental confusion, brain damage, and lung disease.
The PSM leader praised NDLEA Ogun Command, led by Commander Tijani Rabe, for initiating an inter-agency football match to celebrate the day.
He said the football competition would foster harmony among security agencies, in line with international best practices.
