Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has praised the Public Complaints Commission, PCC, for its role in addressing disputes in the country.
He expressed concerns that the Nigerian Ombudsman’s achievements were not adequately recognized.
The Speaker made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the Chief Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Abimbola Ayo-Yusuf, and the leadership of the Nigerian Ombudsman to his office at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
The Public Complaints Commission is a statutory body operating under the National Assembly.
Present at the meeting were the Majority Leader of the House, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere; Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki; Minority Whip, Hon. Ali Isa; and Chairman of the House Ad Hoc Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Khadijat Bukar-Ibrahim.
In response to the Chief Commissioner’s concerns about issues affecting the PCC, the Speaker acknowledged that he was aware of the challenges faced by the commission.
He assured the management of the House’s willingness to assist in addressing these challenges.
The Speaker referred to the Public Complaints Commission as the “people’s house,” emphasizing its significance as the only place where ordinary citizens could seek redress.
He commended their work and urged them to raise awareness about their services to garner more public appreciation and support.
The Chief Commissioner, Ayo-Yusuf, extended congratulations to the Speaker on his election as the Number 4 Citizen and commended his leadership.
He took the opportunity to highlight the underfunding of the Commission and appealed to the Speaker to use his influence to secure special financial intervention.
This intervention would enable the Commission to fulfil its financial obligations, such as paying the approved Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS) and addressing accumulated promotion arrears of staff.
Ayo-Yusuf emphasized that failure to address these outstanding liabilities could lead to industrial action by the Commission’s trade unions, which would undermine public confidence in the Commission’s ability to resolve complaints effectively.
