Speaker Abbas commends Super Eagles despite AFCON final loss

In the aftermath of Nigeria’s defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has offered commendations to the Super Eagles for their spirited performance throughout the tournament.

On Sunday night, Nigeria faced a tough challenge against the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, ultimately losing by a scoreline of two goals to one in the final of the continental male football competition.

In a statement by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Speaker expressed his admiration for the Nigerian male national team, highlighting their ability to unite citizens across religious, ethnic, and political divides.

He emphasized that the country was brought together by the team’s outstanding performance at the tournament.

Acknowledging the Super Eagles’ efforts, Speaker Abbas stated, “The Super Eagles, based on their performance at the tournament, deserved victory but narrowly lost the AFCON trophy. Nevertheless, they have proven that Nigeria remains the giant of Africa in sport and other endeavors.”

Addressing the team directly at the conclusion of the game, he conveyed the nation’s pride in their achievements, stating, “During the tournament, Nigerians showed that we are one great nation. Nigerians are proud of you.”

Furthermore, Speaker Abbas assured the Super Eagles of a warm reception upon their return to the country, emphasizing that the House, under his leadership, would continue to support initiatives aimed at promoting sports and youth development.
