Former presidential candidate and Human Rights activist, Omoyele Sowore said he had been granted bail on Monday, January 27, 2025, following an engagement with the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.
Sowore was recently summoned to address several allegations which included resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and acts allegedly intended to prevent arrests.
Announcing his release in a post via X.com, the activist said the Deputy Inspector-General of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer pending the conclusion of an “investigation.”
“The DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja had just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the “investigation,” he wrote.
Sowore, however, stated that he has advised the DIG that in accepting the “bail”, he won’t agree to conditions that compromise his innocence, dignity, and integrity.
“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court, even then I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the PoliceNG hierarchy,” he said.
According to him, he was being targeted by the police because of his criticism against the tenure extension for Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police.
The activist also alleged that the police planned to detain him and take him to Lagos for a kangaroo trial.
