Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Onitsha main market for 7 days as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the state’s directive against the controversial Monday sit-at-home order.
The shutdown follows repeated defiance by traders in the market who refused to open for business on Monday despite the government’s warning.
During a visit to the market, Governor Soludo warned that if the market remains closed after the one-week shutdown, it will be shut down for one month.
The governor explained that the closure was necessary to protect law-abiding citizens and reinforce the authority of the state. He emphasized that the government cannot stand by while individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives.
Security personnel, including the police and army, have been deployed to seal the market gates and ensure compliance with the shutdown order. The government is determined to restore normalcy and maintain law and order in the state.
*Consequences of Non-Compliance*
The governor’s warning to the traders is clear: failure to comply with the government’s directive will result in severe consequences. The shutdown of the market for one month would likely have significant economic implications for the traders and the state as a whole.
