Six Reps dump NNPP, PDP for ADC, APC as House power shifts

Six members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, further altering the chamber’s balance of power.

Four NNPP lawmakers moved to the ADC: Sani Adamu Wakil, Minjibir/Ungogo, Kano; Umar Mukthar Zakari, Tarauni, Kano; Yusuf Umar Datti, Kura/Madobi/Garun Mallam, Kano; and Abdulhakeem Kamilo Ado, Wudil/Garko, Kano.

Two PDP members also crossed. Emeka Chinedu Martin, Ahiazu/Ezinihitte/Mbaise, joined the ADC, while Kabiru Ahmadu Maipalace, Gusau/Tsafe, Zamfara, defected to the APC.

The lawmakers blamed “persistent internal crises” in their former parties, saying the turmoil had made the platforms ineffective and unable to provide coherent leadership or uphold core democratic principles.

The defections lift the ADC to roughly 24 seats in the House. The APC consolidates its majority at 282.

The PDP drops to around 30, with Labour Party on 10, APGA on five, Accord on four, and both APP and SDP on two each.

The NNPP is left with one member. That foothold is at risk following the recent death of Mohammed Danjuma Hassan.

If the seat is declared vacant, the NNPP could fall behind even the Young Progressives Party in House representation.
