● ATP 500 event starts on Sunday
Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and Alexander Zverev has accepted a wild card, the ATP 500 event announced on Friday.
The No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings Sinner is competing for the first time since the Australian Open this fortnight at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, where he is into the semi-finals on home soil in Rome.
Sinner defeated Tommy Paul on Friday 1-6, 6-0, and 6-3 and had only dropped a set so far at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
The Italian now leads the American 4-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series and holds a perfect 12-0 record on the season according to Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
The 2024 Nitto ATP Finals champion is chasing his fifth Masters 1000 title in Rome and will then head to Roland Garros, where he will aim to capture a third major title.
The ATP 500 clay-court event in Hamburg begins on Sunday and runs until 24 May.
Germany’s Zverev will lead the field as the top seed after accepting a wild card.
Zverev has fond memories in Hamburg, having lifted the title on home soil in 2023.
The 28-year-old is 24-9 on the year, highlighted by his title run in Munich.
