A former deputy governor of Sokoto State and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mukhtar Shagari, has said he declined the offer to become the running mate of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
Shagari said he turned down the offer after the Labour Party representatives who contacted him were unable to provide a satisfactory answer when he asked how many members of the party held major positions in Sokoto State.
He said this in an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday.
The former deputy governor added that he believes the Labour Party cannot defeat the PDP in any election in the country.
“I was one of the first people the Labour Party contacted if I would like to be the vice presidential candidate to Peter Obi. But at the end of the day, I told them that I will not be able to leave my party.
“Because I believe in the philosophy of my party. I believe in what my party stands for in Nigeria and I also believe that the Labour Party will not be able to defeat my party in any election,” Shagari said.
