The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project ( jSERAP) has called on the Tinubu administration to direct the leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to immediately end the alleged intimidation, harassment, and threats against Ushie Uguamaye, a youth corper who reportedly criticized President Bola Tinubu over the rising inflation and worsening economic hardship in the country.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, SERAP condemned the reported actions of the NYSC, describing them as a violation of fundamental human rights.

The organization emphasized that freedom of expression was a constitutionally protected right under Nigerian law and international human rights conventions.

“Everyone has a right to criticize their government without fear of reprisals. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right that must be protected in a democratic society,” SERAP stated.

“Targeting a youth corps member for expressing her opinion on economic issues affecting millions of Nigerians sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of democracy and accountability.”

SERAP further criticized the NYSC leadership for treating legitimate criticism as a crime, urging the administration to intervene and ensure that Uguamaye is not subjected to any further intimidation or punishment.

“The NYSC board should stop treating criticism as a crime and immediately end the intimidation, harassment, and threat against Ms. Ushie Uguamaye,” the statement continued.

“The administration must direct the NYSC leadership to guarantee her safety and security, ensuring that no harm comes to her as a result of her exercising her right to free speech,” it said.

SERAP warned that it would take legal action if the threats and harassment against Uguamaye were not immediately withdrawn, stressing that holding government officials accountable was essential for promoting transparency and good governance.

“The right to criticize government policies and actions without fear of persecution is a cornerstone of any democratic society,” SERAP added.

“We will not hesitate to pursue all available legal avenues to protect this right if the threats against Ms. Uguamaye are not immediately withdrawn,” it stated.

The controversy arose after Uguamaye reportedly posted comments on social media criticizing the government’s handling of inflation and the broader economic challenges facing the country.

The NYSC leadership allegedly summoned and threatened her with disciplinary action, prompting widespread condemnation from human rights advocates and civil society organizations.

SERAP’s intervention comes amid growing public frustration over the rising cost of living, food shortages, and other economic difficulties.

The organization urged the Tinubu administration to demonstrate its commitment to protecting civil liberties and fostering a culture of openness and accountability.

“The administration must lead by example by respecting the constitutional rights of all Nigerians, including youth corpers,” SERAP concluded.

It stated: “Silencing dissenting voices will only deepen public discontent and erode trust in the government.”
