Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the suspension of “Idon Mikiya”, a programme on Abuja-based radio station Vision FM, for allegedly discussing “issues regarding a national security agency.”
In a reaction, SERAP said the suspension of Vision FM programmes is arbitrary, unconstitutional, and illegal.
SERAP called on the Muhammadu Buhari led administration and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should immediately lift the suspension and reverse the fine of N5 million imposed on the radio station.
“This action by the Buhari administration and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is yet another example of Nigerian authorities’ push to silence independent media and voices.
“The administration must lift the suspension and uphold the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and international obligations to respect and protect the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.
“This is a new low in Nigeria’s protection of freedom of expression, and the ability of independent media to function in the country,” SERAP said.
According to reports, the suspension was contained in a letter signed by the NBC Director-General, Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, addressed to the Managing Director of Vision Media Service Limited. The letter said the suspension took effect from January 28.
The suspension, according to the letter, was after the NBC monitored the broadcast of Idon Mikiya programme on January 5 on both Vision FM and Farin Wata TV.
The Buhari administration must reverse the illegal suspension within 48 hours or face legal action, SERAP said.
