Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to immediately withdraw the “blatantly unjust minimum wage bill that would allow state governors to violate workers’ right to a just remuneration.”
It also said that governors shouldn’t be allowed to short-change workers while collecting life pensions.
SERAP stated these while reacting to the bill to amend the minimum wage law reportedly sponsored by Garba Datti Muhammad (APC) Kaduna.
The group also urged President Buhari administration to cut the costs of governance and use recovered stolen public funds to fund a just remuneration for Nigerian workers.
SERAP said the Federal Government could begin by cutting security votes and enforcing Justice Oguntoyinbo’s judgment stopping life pensions.
“We are concerned that vulnerable Nigerian workers are left in a precarious situation, unable to ensure a decent standard of living for themselves and their families, and without access to clean water, quality healthcare, and education.
“President Buhari should provide bold leadership to improve conditions for the ‘working poor’ and ordinary Nigerians by publicly rejecting the bill before the Federal Government and supporting a just remuneration to enable Nigerian workers to live a decent life, ” SERAP said.
The group further stated that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) should take legal action to seek refund of N13.5 million monthly ‘running cost’ for each senator and N10 million for each member of the House of Representatives.
SERAP said the RMAFC had already declared the allowances illegal and contrary to the law on salaries and allowances of public office holders.
