Senator Seriake Dickson, former Bayelsa State governor and current senator, is set to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
This move is expected to significantly impact the South-South region’s political dynamics and potentially trigger a wave of defections among prominent politicians seeking alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson hinted at the impending move on social media, stating, “Major Announcement is Coming!!! Tomorrow, Thursday, 5th March 2026, at 2:00 PM, I will be making an important statement at a Press Conference addressing the future of our people and our democracy.”
The press conference is expected to formally announce his defection and outline reasons for leaving the PDP, a party he’s been associated with for decades.
The NDC recently received its registration certificate from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ending a prolonged legal battle that began in 2017.
The party’s Protem National Legal Adviser, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, described the moment as a victory for democracy, positioning the NDC as an alternative platform for Nigerians dissatisfied with existing parties.
