The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has emphasised the importance of food security in Nigeria, highlighting the Senate’s commitment to passing key bills that will boost agricultural production, create jobs, and reduce import bills.
Akpabio spoke at the price hearing organised by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production Services and Rural Development held at the Conference Room 022 of the Senate on Monday, October 27, 2025.
The key bills are:
● Cassava Inclusion into Flour Production Bill, which aims to create employment opportunities, reduce import bills, and improve the living standards of rural farmers by incorporating cassava into flour production;
● National Food Reserve Agency Bill, which seeks to establish a dedicated agency to serve as a buffer against shocks from climate change, border closures, and other natural catastrophes, ensuring food security for millions of Nigerians;
● Rice Development Council of Nigeria Bill, which aims to create millions of jobs, reduce foreign exchange spending on rice importation, and make Nigeria Africa’s rice powerhouse through research, irrigation schemes, and value chain development.
Akpabio said that “These bills are not mere pieces of legislation but bridges to a future where no Nigerian goes to bed hungry.
