The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwom (PDP Plateau), said that contrary to speculations doing the rounds, the former Governor Nyesom Wike-led G-5 did not play any role whatsoever in his emergence as a principal officer of the Upper chamber of the National Assembly.
Mwadkwom, however, said that Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who initially wanted to contest the position, was the one who said at the caucus meeting that he (Mwadkwom) should be announced as the Minority Leader of the Senate.
Read him: “Tambuwal was the one that stood up and said if Senator Simon has this number of signatures, he wishes to state categorically that I should be allowed to hold the position (Senate Minority Leader)”.
Mwadkwom, who made the clarification when he appeared on Arise Television programme explained that it was Senators of the opposition parties that believed in him, and nominated him to be the Senate Minority Leader.
He said that contrary to the claims that the Wike-led G-5 imposed him in order to pay Senator Tambuwal back for stepping down for Atiku Abubakar at the presidential primary election of the PDP, stressed that there was no external force at play whatsoever.
Mwadkwom said that it was Tambuwal that sought that he should be announced as the Minority Leader since he satisfied the requirements of the law.
He said that there was no political feud between him and Tambuwal, adding that he had high regards for the immediate past governor of Sokoto State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
