The Senate and the House of Representatives have approved additional executive directors for the recently established zonal commissions, namely the South South, Southwest, and North Central development commissions.
Both Houses at Wednesday plenary amended the establishing Acts, paving the way for an increment to 12 executive directors from the previous 5
The federal legislature said that the action was aimed at improving administrative efficiency of the regional bodies.
At the Senate, the Leader Opeyemi Bamidele noted that the amendments were introduced through three separate bills:
A Bill for an Act to Amend the South-South Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 781), another, a Bill for an Act to Amend the North-Central Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 782) and the third, a Bill for an Act to Amend the South-West Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 783)
Giving a synopsis of the Bill, Senator Bamidele explained that the amendments were designed to address gaps in the original Acts, particularly concerning the appointment of Executive Directors.
He explained that the previous structure lacked consistency when compared to the North-West and South-East Development Commissions.
He said that while the initial versions of the Acts had been signed into law by President Bola Tinubu and were already in effect, it had become clear during their implementation that additional Executive Directors were needed to oversee the various departments and ensure the commissions were effectively run to achieve their goals
At the House of Representatives, Leader of the House Julius Ihonvbhere noted that the amendments were carried out to increase the number of executive directors from 5 to 12 for efficiency of the commission.
