The Senate on Wednesday declared the Edo Central senatorial seat vacant, following the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo to the position of Governor of Edo State.
In addition, the Senate has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacancy.
Senate had suspended Order 12 (1) of its standing rules to permit the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebolo, to bid farewell.
Okpebolo, who previously represented Edo Central in the 10th Senate, was accompanied by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, and former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Matthew Urhoghide, who also served as Okpebholo’s campaign Director General.
The Senate has also appointed Senator Olajide Ipisagba, representing Ondo North, as the new chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, replacing Senator Monday Okpebholo, who held the position while in the Senate.
