The role of media in helping to resolve the seemingly intractable conflict enveloping the nation would be the main focus as over 500 editors and media owners – both within and outside the country, gather for the 17th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Abuja this Thursday.
According to official, this year conference, which will focus on the current security challenges in Nigeria, with a theme “Media in Times of Crisis: Resolving Conflict, Achieving Consensus”, is aimed at achieving consensus among media owners, managers and senior editors on what role the media can play in helping to resolve the seemingly intractable conflict enveloping the nation today.
The editors conference, which is the largest gathering of Nigerian editors and owners of mass media: newspapers, magazines, radio/television stations and online newspapers in Nigeria, is scheduled to hold between October 21 and 22 at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.
‘’The annual conference also attracts our foreign partners: World Editors Forum (WEF), West African Editors Forum (WAEF), African Editors Forum (AEF), International Press Institute (IPI) and World Association of Newspapers (WAN).
‘’This year annual conference will attract top security officers, governors, lawmakers, academics, chief executive officers in private sector, members of the international community, leading non-governmental organisations and others’’, a statement signed by the Nigerian Guild Editors President, Mustapha Isah and the General Secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren stated.
The editors said the conference, which is designed to be ‘’intellectually engaging’’ – with several experienced resources persons, will also feature an executive session with state governors and security chiefs.”
‘’The executive session will provide a huge opportunity for governors and security chiefs to share with owners of newspapers, radio/television stations and editors, the challenges of managing insecurity in their states and the progress they have made so far’’, the statement added.
Meanwhile, prelude to commencement of the confab on Thursday, members and support staff members of the Guild began to arrive in Abuja on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
The accreditation of delegates commenced on Wednesday, October 20, at the Top Rank Hotel Galaxy, Utako, Abuja.
As of 7pm on Wednesday, over 200 senior journalists from across the country had been accredited.
The conference will take place at the NAF Convention Centre, Jabi, Abuja, beginning from 10am on Thursday October 21.
The National Security Adviser (NSA) Major General Baba Gana Munguno (retd) and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Lucky Irabor, will participate in the event.
Veteran journalists like Chief Ray Ekpu, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Bonnie Iwuoha, John Araka, among others, will be at the ceremony.
Senior media professionals like Dr Tunde Olusunle, former Editorial Board member of the Daily Times and former presidential assistant; Steve Osuji of The Interviewer; and Steve Nwosu of The Sun, among others, were sighted at the venue of the accreditation.
The 2021 event will also feature the induction of about a dozen Editors, including Ehi Brimah and Shaka Momodu, into the exclusive membership of the Guild.
The event will be rounded off with a dinner and gala night on Friday, October 22, 2021.
