Venezuela Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez had condemned the “armed aggression against our country” and added that the country’s defence council had been “activated.”
She said in a television broadcast in Caracas that further response from the government could be expected over the coming hours.

“To our Venezuela, to our people: There is a clear government here,” she said, adding that Venezuela was open to respectful and lawful dialogue.

Rodríguez said the government was a ready “to defend” Venezuela, after Trump said the US would “run” the country.
Rodríguez also called for calm and unity.

Rodríguez, on state television, said Nicolás Maduro was Venezuela’s only president.

“There is only one president in Venezuela, and his name is Nicolas Maduro,” she said.
It comes after US President Donald Trump earlier said she was the country’s new leader, after Maduro was captured by US forces overnight.
