The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIECRSIEC, has said that the local government election billed for Saturday (today) will be held.
The RSIEC made this known following the position of the Rivers State Police Command that it won’t provide security for the poll.
But reacting in a statement on Friday night, the RSIEC Commissioner for Civil Education/Public Affairs, Tobin Tamunotonye, said the election would go on as scheduled.
Tamunotonye said: “For the avoidance of doubt, we emphasize unequivocally that the 5th October 2024 Local Government Council Elections in Rivers State will hold as scheduled, and there is no going back.”
He cited the RSIEC Law of 2018, judgement of Hon Justice I. P. C. Igwe of the High Court of Rivers State, delivered on September 4, 2024, and the 1999 Constitution as the basis for the position of the commission.
He said the agency was empowered to conduct local government elections in the state.
