The House of Representatives Committee on Youth Development has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s and Federal Government’s total commitment to improving the welfare of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members across all orientation camps nationwide.
The assurance was given at the weekend in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during an oversight inspection of the NYSC Orientation Camp and other camps.

Speaking after the tour, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Martin Esin, expressed satisfaction with the discipline of corps members, the professionalism of camp officials, and the state of facilities on ground.
“The Committee has taken judicial notice of the demands presented at this camp. They are consistent with what we observed in other camps we have visited,” Esin said. “We will transmit these concerns to the appropriate authorities for prompt action to further improve the living conditions of corps members.”

On arrival, the lawmakers were received with full military honours. A Guard of Honour mounted by corps members was inspected by Hon. Esin.
The Committee immediately proceeded to inspect critical camp facilities. At the Camp Clinic, which is managed entirely by corps doctors and nurses, members commended the quality of healthcare services being delivered by the corps members.
Subsequent inspections covered the hostels, general camp environment, and the kitchen. During the kitchen visit, lawmakers interacted directly with corps members and the Kitchen Coordinator to assess feeding arrangements and overall welfare.

In an engagement with the Committee, the Camp Coordinator listed several facility upgrades and welfare improvements needed to enhance the corps members’ experience.
Addressing the corps members, Hon. Esin urged them to maximize their three-week orientation period by acquiring at least one vocational skill. He also encouraged unity and free interaction among members from diverse backgrounds.

He, however, cautioned corps members against unauthorized travel during their primary assignment. “Such movements attract sanctions. Please adhere to NYSC rules to avoid sanctions that could jeopardize your service year,” he warned.
The oversight tour forms part of the Committee’s mandate to ensure that NYSC camps nationwide meet acceptable standards of safety, health, and welfare for Nigerian youths in service.
