Maj.-Gen. Olusegun Abai, Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Army Headquarters, Abuja, has urged recruits to remain resilient on the battlefield after completing their training.

Abai made the call while speaking at a seminar organised for recruits at the Depot Nigerian Army in Osogbo on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seminar was themed “Warrior Ethos: A Tool for Building Unit Cohesion and a Combat-Ready Force.”

The seminar was organised by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation, Abuja, for the recruits.

Abai said the warrior ethos, characterised by courage, discipline and resilience, remains the bedrock of a formidable fighting force.

He said the seminar was designed to equip army officers, soldiers and recruits with the knowledge, tools and strategies needed to overcome operational challenges.

“The seminar today focuses on intensifying the warrior ethos, a concept that has never been more critical than now as we confront the modern psychological and physical demands of fighting on the frontline.

“The theme of the seminar aligns seamlessly with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.
“This philosophy seeks to advance the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of decisively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment,” he said.

Abai said the COAS’ philosophy recognises that the Army’s greatest asset is not just its equipment but the mental and physical well-being of the individual soldier.

“As you continue to record significant successes in the course of your training, you must ensure that the warrior spirit within you remains unbroken by the invisible scars of battle,” he said.

He, however, noted that the psychological toll of prolonged operations, coupled with the temptation to resort to substance abuse, poses significant risks to personnel’s operational effectiveness.

According to him, the knowledge gained from the seminar is expected to broaden the recruits’ perspectives, inspire innovative leadership approaches and equip them with practical strategies to implement within their units.

“Let us use this seminar to bridge the gap between trauma and triumph.

“Together, we will continue to uphold the honour of the Nigerian Army and secure the peace our nation deserves,” he said.

A resource person at the seminar, retired Maj.-Gen. Charles Ofoche, urged the recruits to be fearless, patriotic and uphold the Army’s creed.

Ofoche said the recruits must obey military rules at all times and remain ready to fight a just cause and win.

“You must fight well and win the battle because that is the spirit of the Army,” he said.

He also urged the recruits to embrace the Army’s core values of selfless service, honour, integrity, courage, loyalty and discipline.

“You must have a warrior spirit. It is what drives you to win the war,” he said.
