PSC dismisses four senior police officers, sanctions 31 others over misconduct

The Police Service Commission, PSC, has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others for various acts of misconduct, as part of efforts to enforce discipline and professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.

The disciplinary actions were approved during the Commission’s plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, the PSC said the four dismissed officers were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and acts unbecoming of public officers.

The Commission also approved demotions for 10 senior officers:

– 3 Superintendents of Police reduced to Deputy Superintendents of Police

– 2 Deputy Superintendents of Police demoted to Assistant Superintendents of Police

– 5 Assistant Superintendents of Police reduced to the rank of Inspector

Two other officers were compulsorily retired in the public interest.

Additional disciplinary measures include:

– Severe reprimand for 10 officers
– Reprimand for 5 officers
– Warning letters for 3 officers
– Letter of advice issued to 1 officer

Seven officers were exonerated after the Commission found no evidence of wrongdoing against them.

Chairman of the PSC, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Salihu Argungu, said the Commission will not tolerate misconduct within the Force.

“The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers,” Argungu said.

He added that while misconduct will attract appropriate sanctions, the Commission will also recognize officers who demonstrate diligence, integrity, and outstanding performance.

The PSC said the latest actions underscore its commitment to strengthening accountability, promoting professionalism, and enhancing public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
