Prodigy Alert: Six-year-old Aisosa Agbonifo wins second straight STEM Olympiad gold, makes history again

He’s just 6 years old. But Aisosa Agbonifo is already making a habit of breaking records.

The Banana Island International School pupil has done it again, clinching his second consecutive STEM Olympiad mathematics gold medal after dominating the Grade 2 category at the 2026 competition.

—From youngest winner to back-to-back champion—

Aisosa first stunned the academic world in 2025 when, at just five years old, he became the youngest Nigerian ever to win gold in the STEM Olympiad after topping the Grade 1 maths category.

Twelve months later, he’s back on the podium — older, wiser, and still unbeatable.

With this latest triumph, Aisosa has now secured back-to-back gold medals in consecutive editions of the prestigious international contest.

The STEM Olympiad is not about cramming. It tests practical problem-solving, critical thinking, and logical reasoning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The competition is open to students from Grades 1 to 12, with children competing strictly within their grade level. Winning it twice in a row at that age puts Aisosa in a league of his own.

Aisosa’s victory comes just days after three other Nigerian students struck gold at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy.

Onyedikachi Egejurum, Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso all represented Nigeria after qualifying through the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad.

Don Anele didn’t stop there. He bagged a second gold in Science, pushing Nigeria’s total haul at the global finals to four gold medals.

The organisers have announced that registration for the 2027 International STEM Olympiad will open after August 15, with the next Grand Final set for Lisbon, Portugal.
