●As Judiciary condemns shooting
A magistrate was shot last Thursday at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi County.
A few hours later, the Judiciary condemned the shooting of the magistrate.
The magistrate was shot.for revoking the bail bond of the Policeman’s wife.
In a statement, the Judiciary stated that it was enhancing the security protocols for all civilians visiting courts across the country and assured all judicial officers of their safety while going about their activities.
Winfrida Mokaya, who signed the document in her capacity as the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary further revealed that the incident occurred after the magistrate cancelled the bond of a suspect whose case she was handling.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect is police officer’s wife.
“During an open court session earlier today, the magistrate cancelled the bond and failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond. Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip,” read the statement.
Mokaya called for calm, reiterating that the law enforcement agencies had commenced thorough investigations into the matter.
The Judiciary further confirmed that the police officer who shot the magistrate was shot by other police officers immediately after firing at the magistrate.
Judiciary issued the statement after the incident which captured national attention after the news broke out.
Reports indicated that the senior police officer opened fire while the principal magistrate was leading the court session. He is said to have shot her inflicting severe injuries.
The incident disrupted Thursday’s proceedings grinding activities to a halt.
The magistrate, and another civilian injured during the incident were rushed to the hospital for specialised treatment.
Police who arrived at the court shortly after, moved the deceased’s body to the local morgue where it will be preserved before an autopsy is conducted. [kenyans.co.ke]
