Police warn against reprisals over alleged xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

The Nigeria Police Force has called for calm following reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and fears of reprisal attacks on South Africans and their businesses in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Force PRO, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on May 30, 2026, the Police said security and intelligence agencies reviewed the situation after a Joint Intelligence Board Meeting chaired by the National Security Adviser on May 18, 2026.

The Force assured Nigerians there is “no cause for alarm,” adding that the Federal Government is engaging relevant authorities through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to protect Nigerians at home and abroad.

While acknowledging public concern over attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, the Police warned citizens against taking the law into their own hands.

“Reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, or any conduct that threatens public peace and national security is unlawful and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

The Police stressed that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and all persons lawfully residing in the country, regardless of nationality, are entitled to protection. Any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic facilities, businesses, or other lawful interests will be treated as a criminal act.

—Increased security, warning on fake news—

The Force said it has increased surveillance and deployments around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other key locations to prevent breakdown of law and order.

It also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified, inflammatory, or inciting content on social media, saying false information can escalate tensions and undermine diplomatic efforts.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to protecting lives and property, preserving public peace, and maintaining national security,” DCP Placid stated. “The public is encouraged to remain calm, law-abiding, vigilant, and continue lawful activities without fear.”

The statement was signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
