The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed as false a viral message claiming that dialling certain USSD codes could help mobile phone users detect and remove hackers from their devices.

In a statement released Tuesday night on its official X handle, the Force clarified that the codes *#61# and ##002# — widely circulated on social media and messaging platforms — did not originate from the NPF and should not be regarded as an official advisory.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to clarify that the recent message circulating about using USSD codes *#61# and ##002# to detect and remove phone hackers is NOT an official communication from the Force,” the statement read.

The NPF urged Nigerians to exercise caution when receiving unverified digital safety tips online, warning that the spread of misinformation could expose unsuspecting individuals to greater risks.

The Force advised the public to rely strictly on official communication channels for accurate updates and guidance, while also taking necessary cybersecurity precautions to safeguard their devices and personal data.
