The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it has arrested two robbery suspects after a Samsung phone that was snatched at gunpoint was allegedly found with them.

It also announced that operatives who effected their arrest turned down an N.8 million bribe offered to them.

This was confirmed in a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Timfon John, on Friday.

John said: “One of the suspects, 53-year-old, was arrested after a Samsung phone that was snatched at gun point was traced to him.”

She said that the suspect had a history of similar offences as he was charged to court for similar crimes in 2024.

She said that the other suspect was arrested after he brought the bribe to the Special Weapon and Tactics Unit (SWAT) to secure the release of the main suspect.

According to her, the suspect was taken into custody after the offer was rejected.

John said that the officer in charge of the SWAT unit and a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Ebong Thompson, rejected the sum of N800,000 bribe offered to him on July 30.

She said that the money was intended to secure the release of a robbery suspect and also to cover up the crime.

John said that all officers concerned with this discreet investigation received a commendation letter from the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare.

The command spokesperson warned members of the public to desist from compromising police investigation.
