The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 27-year-old lady, Esther Akwaji, in Abuja.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Superintendent Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Friday.
She said the brother of the deceased, Peter Akwaji, on January 22, 2026about 11pm reported to Dei-Dei Divisional Police Headquarters through a distress call that the sister left home on January 21.
Adeh said the deceased brother told the police that the deceased left home about 3pm to go to a bank in Dei-Dei but never returned.
She said: “He further disclosed that about 10:30pm the same day, he received an anonymous telephone call from an individual who identified himself as the deceased’s boyfriend.
“That the caller told him that the deceased visited him at his residence, where he bought food for her and after eating, she began to vomit.
“That the caller claimed that the sister was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.”
Adeh said a team of police operatives from Dei-Dei Division, following the report, immediately swung into action and proceeded to the hospital where the lifeless body of the deceased was recovered.
She said the lifeless body was deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death.
She said the command had commenced discreet investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death, while efforts were ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is presently on the run.
She pledged the commitment of the command to ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice.
According to Adeh, further developments would be communicated as the investigations progress.
