The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed claims doing the rounds on social media, suggesting that the Inspector General of Police is meddling in the 2024 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT elections.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police clarified that their involvement was limited to investigating a petition alleging certificate forgery and was unrelated toNUJ electoral process.
The petition, submitted on November 25, 2024, to the FCT Commissioner of Police by Mr. Emeka Nze, Mr. Victorson Agbenson, and Mr. Johnchuks Onuanyim, accused Miss Grace Ike, Miss Edeh Sandra Ogechukwu, Mr. Yahaya Ndambabo, and Mr. Jide Oyekunle Adeyemi of forging Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) certificates from the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja.
According to the command, the investigation involved routine questioning of the accused individuals to verify the claims.
The police emphasized that this action was in line with their duty to uphold the rule of law and maintain public order.
“The Nigerian Police Force has no interest in or influence over the NUJ elections or their outcomes. Our focus remains on ensuring justice through a fair and transparent investigation,” the statement read.
The command urged all parties to respect the integrity of the investigation and refrain from spreading false accusations that could undermine public confidence. The outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public in due course.
