Police, CLEEN foundation train officers on GBV prevention strategies

The Police in Delta, in collaboration with CLEEN Foundation have trained Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention strategies.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Friday while briefing newsmen in Asaba.
He said the Specialised Command-Specific Training for DPOs with the theme: ” Towards strengthening prevention and response to GBV” was convened by the CLEEN Foundation.
According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Yemi Oyeniyi, in his address at the event, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating GBV through continuous capacity building and professional development of police officers.
The commissioner lauded the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Olatunji Disu, for ensuring institutional reforms, capacity development, and the promotion of professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
He disclosed that the training reflected the I-G’s vision of a modern, people-centred, and service-oriented police, capable of effectively addressing contemporary security and social challenges.

He urged them to maintain professionalism, empathy, diligence, and strict adherence to extant laws and established policing standards.
The commissioner tasked the senior police officers to leverage the knowledge gained from the training to strengthen investigations, improve support for survivors, and enhance public confidence in policing.
He said the command remained steadfast in its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, supporting survivors, and ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence are brought to justice.
The CP expressed appreciation to the CLEEN Foundation for its sustained partnership with the force in advancing human rights, accountability, and professional policing.
While emphasising the importance of continuous learning and specialised training, CP Aina Adesola, the Commissioner of Police, Department of Training, Force Headquarters, Abuja, said the training would equip officers with the skills required to effectively respond to emerging policing challenges, particularly gender-based violence.
A cross-section of the participants lauded the Police and CLEEN Foundation for organising the workshop.
They noted that they now have the knowledge, skills and tools required to prevent GBV, respond to survivors with empathy and promote gender equality within their areas of responsibility.
The senior police officers said that gender-based violence remained one of the most prevalent human rights violations and assured that they would train their officers to show more empathy to the victims.
The participants were trained on GBV prevention strategies, survivor-centred policing, investigative best practices, and multi-stakeholders collaboration.
The training was attended by Adesola and other senior police officers of the command.
